Clarion-Around

Words: © 1995 by Tom Smith
Music: "Run-Around" by Jon Popper
We used to have a great hotel for the Ohio Valley Filk Fest (OVFF) in Columbus, OH. It was a little Hilton on High Street, about a hundred yards inside the north part of the I-270 loop, and it was easy to get to, and it was only three stories high, and it had lots of function space, and the food was good, and the hotel liked us, and we liked them, and for several years it was really great. Then one year, the hotel was bought by the Clarion chain. What happened on Saturday night at the one and only Clarion OVFF, in 1995, is recorded for posterity below, pretty much exactly as it happened. Sorry if it's got an attitude, but, hey. Note to beginning guitar players! If you haven't learned this song yet, you'll love it. The chords are: G--C--A minor--D. Repeat until the song is done. I leave it to you to actually learn where the chord changes are.

Oh, once upon a midnight clear,
We were having a little sing,
When in came a geeky rent-a-cop
To ruin everything.

Like a disgruntled postal worker,
His male was gorged with blood,
He said, Shut up or I'll kick you out,
His words landed with a thud,
Yeah, his words landed with a thud.

Well, I came down for a good old time,
Not to hear the mundanes whine,
We brought our drums, we brought guitars,
The contract said the place was ours,
Your doors were open, you took our cash,
Then told us we can't have our bash --

Clarion,
Why you want to give us a run-around?
Well, it's one a.m. and we're all up,
So why you wanna shut us down?

Well, something mundane this way comes,
He ain't sleeping very well,
He says we woke him with our drums --
Well, what's he doin' in a filk hotel?

But you didn't think about our contract,
Only this whining little twit,
So you called the local cops on us,
And the whole thing is full of shit,
Yeah, the whole thing is full of shit.

I appreciate we might be loud,
'Cause we can be a raucous crowd,
But we been waiting for this all year,
You can't pretend we're not supposed to be here,
So mundane guests and hotel brass,
You all can kiss my filking ass --

Clarion,
Why you want to give us a run-around?
Well, it's two a.m. and we're all up,
So why you wanna shut us down?

Tra-la-la-bomba, hi, folks, this is your cap'n,
Listen loud and clear,
It's a nice hotel, shame if something should happen
And tomorrow it ain't here.

Well, we got something you haven't got,
And it comes in a pack of three:
The will to win, the brains to plan,
And a talent for anarchy,
Yeah, a talent for anarchy.

Well, I came down for a good old time,
Not to hear the mundanes whine,
Your doors were open, you took our cash,
Then told us we couldn't have our bash,
Well, we know how to change your luck,
We'll sing for years of how you suck --

Clarion,
Why you want to give us a run-around?
Well, it's three a.m. and we're all up,
No way you're gonna shut us down.

Clarion,
Why you want to give us a run-around?
Well, it's eleven a.m. and we're still up,
There ain't no way you're gonna shut us down.
